Sparkling Julep

The term “Julep” was first used between the 15th and 18th centuries to describe a sweetened medicinal concoction. The sugar made the other less palatable ingredients easier to take. The word eventually found its way to the cocktail world where it is best defined as a sweetened tall drink that is most typically flavored or garnished with mint. The most famous of all Juleps is the Mint Julep served as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1939. While most Juleps today are made with a base of whiskey, earlier versions often used Cognac or local brandies. Today we share with you a different twist on the Julep using Cognac and Sparkling wine. The effervescence adds a refreshing brightness and festive nature to the classic. It is a great summer highball and the perfect icebreaker for alfresco entertaining.

Sparkling Julep

In a tall, pre-chilled Collins glass add:

  • 6 Mint Leaves
  • ½ Ounce Simple Syrup

Muddle gently then fill the glass with crushed ice and add:

  • ½ Ounce V.S. Cognac

Top with Sparkling Wine (we like a Spanish Cava).  Give it all a gentle stir.  Finish with a dash of Angostura.  Serve with a tall straw.  Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
